Take Me

Glenn Lewis had one R&B hit in 2001, you’d probably know it if you heard it.  In fact the title is “Don’t You Forget It”. It was around the time I first got my driver’s license and I would drive my parents’ Honda to my internship at a Battered Women’s Center after school.

For a good few weeks, this song “Take Me” from Glenn Lewis’ old album World Outside My Window stayed on repeat in the Honda, to and from that job every day. I love the song for two basic reasons- first the storytelling of my favorite topic, second the sly movement of the music. It sounds like tiptoeing around delicate glass shards, which Glenn Lewis attempted with this crazy girl. But the best thing about this song is the way he scream-sings *her* last line. “SOMEone help me please!”. We can hear it; girl needs help. Now.

Lyrics:

It was in November, while out one night with friends/
that I saw her there, she was just standing there/
something in her distant stare, a faint look of despair/
to her I was drawn, asked her was anything wrong/
I told her my name, said how you do/
’bout to say you take care, it was nice to meet you/
then she stopped me desperately, as if to say ‘don’t go’/
but then she said to me/

‘Anywhere,
you wanna go,
just take me,
take me’

Not knowing what to say, but I could see/
she was going through some things, and needed someone to be/
there to listen, probably wishing/
she was someone else, and in my heart felt bad/
and I just knew I had, ’cause I’d want the same myself/
so we got into it, and while she talked I thought to myself/
how could it be, that she’d have no one/
not even a friend to come, and she’d have to turn to me and say…/

‘Anywhere,
you wanna go,
just take me,
take me’

Seeking the wrong kind of attention, always in abusive situations/
and don’t know how she got it good, was starting to sound like it could be/
the reason for misery, slowly I could see/
she had problems, nothing I or anyone could say or do/
would help what she was going through, then suddenly/
she stood up across from me, and as loud as she could be/
screaming out ‘SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE!’/
realizing she was gone, wishing I’d minded my own saying/

‘Take me anywhere but here,’/
she’s crazy, crazy

A little further than video DJ-ing. This is part of Kutiman’s new project Thru-You, which is like video DJ-ing, but using ONLY random YouTube videos like samples.  If you wanna see more & the originals click here.

The Soul Chef Meets the Soul Psycho- Nice long soul mix:

Thanks to Vincent at Fufu Stew! Head over there to the full post for a tracklist and individual downloads. You might have most of it from when I posted it here and called it “Birdseed” but the Chef added some great stuff and generally cleaned it all up.

My favorite additions:

Betty Wright- Ain’t No Sunshine

Helene Smith- True Love Don’t Grow On Trees

New Idle Warship

After quitting Myspace and Facebook a year ago, I just joined Twitter and it’s already ruined my life.  I managed to piss off Jean Grae in a matter of hours, so I don’t know how long my tweets will last. Anyway, thanks to my friends at Kevin Knottingam (and Year of the Blacksmith of course…) for this:

Idle Warship- Girls on the Dance Floor

This isn’t my favorite IW song, but it’s pretty good and makes me want to see them live again asap. My favorite is this freestyle over Common’s Neptunes-produced “Universal Mind Control”, because I love these Graph Nobel lyrics:

Get your coffins out, you’re goin in em
Been diggin these graves with a shovel and a grin
Shooting stars, draggin bodies in
Blood, sweat and dirt under my nails again
Runs in the fishnets, scuffs on my shoes
Killin the competition that’s all I’ve been doin
This little lady got murder in her purse
Swag {?}you can hear how I’m killing each verse

Idle Warship- Universal Mind Control freestyle

Unrelated- I’ve been wanting to report on my recent concert experiences but had no time so I’m gonna quickly summarize. Cassandra Wilson brushed her shoulder off like Jay Z during the song “St James Infirmary” while she sang the line he’ll never find another woman like me; Diane Reeves got a standing ovation in the middle of her set at Lincoln Center when she sang “Misty” and we all melted; K’NAAN did his serious thing at Steve Madden to a crowd that probably just cared about shoes (excluding a few obvious fans).  And I missed the Sharon Jones show I was so psyched about, thanks to a(nother) killer migraine, but fuck whoever stole Daptone’s stuff.

Last night this happened at this event for Dilla, in a series of them called “Timeless”, where a live orchestra performed his songs arranged by Miguel Atwood-Ferguson & Carlos Nino. I posted about these orchestral versions of Dilla songs earlier, but they need a little more love. Buy this.
